How to clear brush without a tractor?

I have horses and am moving them from nice groomed pastures where I have been boarding, to my own place. The pastures have been mostly overrun with brush, thistles, burrs and other weeds. I have no tractor currently, is there any "old fashioned, get your hands dirty" way of clearing at least some of the smaller brush? I'm taking a chainsaw to the trees, but not quite sure how to tackle the rest. Thought about getting some goats too???
