What is it meant by "overran" here?

Overran simply means quickly defeated because of superior numbers, strategy or strength - in other words, an easy victory, accomplished quickly. If the two sides fight for a long time and one finally wins, this is not a situation where the winner "overruns" the other side: it has to be quick - the image is that of someone literally "running over" an enemy without hardly pausing.
